EFF hits back at AfriForum over Malema’s crimen injuria prosecution
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to AfriForum’s announcement that it will be pursuing a private prosecution against party leader Julius Malema for crimen injuria.
AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, led by Advocate Gerrie Nel, confirmed this week that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has issued a nolle prosequi certificate, allowing them to proceed with the case. The charge stems from comments made by Malema regarding an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he allegedly accused of rape.
In a statement, the EFF dismissed the move as a desperate attempt by the lobby group to remain relevant and harass their leadership.
The EFF is not intimidated by the frivolous and politically motivated actions of AfriForum, an organization that continues to use the legal system to pursue its narrow, racist agenda against the leadership of the EFF.
The party further argued that the prosecution is a distraction from the real issues facing South Africa, including land reform and economic inequality.
AfriForum, however, maintains that the prosecution is necessary to uphold the rule of law and protect the dignity of individuals who are subjected to what they describe as Malema’s reckless and defamatory rhetoric.
No one is above the law, and Julius Malema must be held accountable for his actions. We will ensure that this case proceeds to trial so that justice can be served for the victim of his unfounded accusations.
The legal battle is expected to draw significant public attention as it pits the EFF’s populist rhetoric against AfriForum’s aggressive use of private prosecution mechanisms.
