EFF hits back at AfriForum over Malema’s crimen injuria prosecution
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded to the news that their leader, Julius Malema, is set to face criminal prosecution for crimen injuria. The charges stem from allegations made by Malema against an Eastern Cape school principal, whom he publicly accused of rape.
AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit successfully lobbied the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to pursue the case, arguing that the accusations were false and defamatory. The lobby group has maintained that such rhetoric is harmful and warrants legal intervention.
The EFF has characterized the move as a politically motivated campaign by AfriForum to silence and intimidate their leadership.
In their statement, the EFF dismissed the prosecution as a desperate attempt by the lobby group to remain relevant and continue their long-standing feud with the party. They asserted that Malema would defend himself vigorously in court and that the truth regarding the principal’s conduct would be revealed during the legal proceedings.
This development marks another chapter in the ongoing legal battles between the EFF and AfriForum, which have frequently clashed over issues of race, political speech, and accountability in the South African public sphere.
