The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will vote against the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, stating that her removal would be premature.

The DA has announced that it will vote against the EFF’s motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza because her removal would be “premature.”

The motion, which was tabled by EFF leader Julius Malema in June, centers on allegations that Didiza failed to act independently and impartially regarding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impeachment inquiry. Specifically, the EFF criticized her decision not to oppose the President’s urgent high court application to interdict the parliamentary impeachment process.

Despite the DA’s previous criticisms of Didiza’s handling of these proceedings, the party has decided to give her the benefit of the doubt for the time being. With the ANC and DA—the two largest parties in the Government of National Unity—both opposing the motion, the EFF’s bid to remove the Speaker is unlikely to succeed, as they would require a simple majority that they currently lack.
