The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced that it will vote against the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) motion of no confidence in National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza, stating that her removal would be premature.

The DA parliamentary leader, George Michalakis, explained that while the party has previously criticized Didiza’s handling of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impeachment proceedings, they believe that removing her at this stage is not the appropriate method to strengthen Parliament.

Michalakis noted that he had met with Didiza on August 11 to raise specific concerns regarding the leadership and institutional effectiveness of Parliament.

The DA will vote against the EFF’s motion of no confidence in National Assembly speaker Thoko Didiza, despite having previously criticised her handling of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impeachment proceedings.

The EFF’s motion, which was tabled by party leader Julius Malema in June, centers on allegations of bias, specifically regarding Didiza’s decision not to oppose President Ramaphosa’s urgent high court application to interdict the parliamentary impeachment process.

With both the ANC and the DA set to vote against the motion, the EFF’s attempt to remove the Speaker is unlikely to succeed, as the two largest parties in the government of national unity hold a significant majority in Parliament.
