Amid rising violence affecting women in South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a strong pledge for action during Heritage Day celebrations, intertwining the national holiday with a commitment to address the country’s gender-based violence (GBV) crisis.

Government is there to protect the people of South Africa, plain and simple. So when things like these happen, government should take responsibility.

The President’s remarks come as the nation grapples with a surge in violent crimes against women, particularly following the discovery of multiple bodies in Ekurhuleni. In response to public outcry and the demand for more than just rhetoric, Ramaphosa has promised a comprehensive update on the government’s strategic response to the epidemic.

The administration is expected to outline a multi-disciplinary strategy that includes strengthening the criminal justice system, enhancing forensic services, and increasing the role of municipalities in ensuring public safety. The President emphasized that while the state must take responsibility, the fight against GBV requires a collective effort, urging men to take an active role in protecting women and changing societal attitudes.
