Mosimane Gives Maboe Injury Update

An injury update has been given by Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane on Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe, who picked up a knock in Amakhosi’s clash against Golden Arrows over the weekend.

Maboe has joined the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, and then will take on Egypt in an international friendly on October 4. The team’s first Group D qualifier is this Saturday against Guinea at Orlando Amstel Arena, before they take on Eritrea in Egypt next Wednesday.

Mosimane confirmed that Maboe has gone for a scan and they will not rush him to get into the team. With Bafana set to be in camp for three matches, Maboe could still get an opportunity to play if he is able to recover.

According to Mosimane, Maboe has a niggling ankle injury, but the coach has his fingers crossed that the influential Amakhosi midfelder will get his chance to play for the national team.

“He’s got a niggling ankle. You could see that the injury he was never even kicked by anybody. So, it’s tender. The doctor has briefed me that we should be careful with him and give him a chance. We have a three week camp…he’s gone for scan. That scan will tell us how far he is. He has worked hard to be in Bafana, (so) he should be disappointed by the injury and no one kicked him. Sometimes it’s football. Let’s hope Lebo recovers,” Mosimane told media before Bafana Bafana’s training at University of Johannesburg this afternoon.

Should Maboe not be able to feature, Mosimane does have quality midfielders to call on to get the job done for the qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea. Brooklyn Poggenpoel has been in good form for Durban City and is raising his hand for regular call-ups, while Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas and Siphephelo Sithole provide the necessary experience to get the team over the line.
