Two suspected armed robbers were shot and fatally wounded, and one was injured, in a shootout with police in KwaMsane just after midnight on Tuesday, 02 June 2026.
Police in Hluhluwe received a report from a man who was robbed by armed suspects in the Hluhluwe policing area. Police responded swiftly, and the vehicle matching the description provided by the victim was spotted travelling southbound on the N2. Police gave chase, and officers from the uMkhanyakude District Task Team provided backup.
The chase continued from the Hluhluwe policing area to KwaMsane, where a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. Three suspects were believed to have been fatally wounded; however, the third suspect regained consciousness while forensic experts were taking photographs and was rushed to hospital under police guard. Three firearms were found in the possession of the suspects, and police are still searching for at least three more suspects who narrowly evaded arrest.
No police officer was injured during the shootout.
